Great book news |
A new 308-page book edited by Peter Wade... We are pleased to announce the publication of this valuable collection containing two complete books and nine significant chapters from great preachers of the 19th century, totalling 47 chapters in all, plus a complete concordance of "In Christ" scriptures, both by form and book order. Paperback, 6" x 9", 308 pages, US$ 15.95, Release date 28th November 2009. There is no other work on the market with so much specific "In Christ" teaching as this new collection.
Nine great teachers from the past... all in one book to inspire, challenge and guide you! These teachers were all household names in their day, all were successful pastors, missionaries, or academics. They came from different denominations and movements... yet all were captivated by just two words in the Word of God:
"In Christ"
Thomas Bernard, Adolf Deissmann, A.J. Gordon, E. Stanley Jones, F.B. Meyer, Andrew Murray, A.T. Pierson, A.B. Simpson, Stephen Tyng -- some were household names in their day, some of their writings have never been out of print. All 47 chapters are taken from original books and are reproduced as their author's first published them, using the KJV or RV Bibles of their day. Emphasis, spelling and punctuation are unchanged. Even though different theological movements are evident, but when you put these differences aside you will thrill as you embrace the insights the authors present.

Gems from "In Christ Treasures"
|
"To be in Christ is to be in a state of grace and spiritual security on earth, in preparation for a future state of blessedness and glory. "If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold all things are become new" (Stephen Higginson Tyng, 1849)
"In Christ Jesus! As the simple voice of faith this word is ever uttered with joy unspeakable and full of glory. But preacher or commentator, who may attempt to sound the depths or open the treasures of its meaning, must
feel his tongue falter under the sense of the inadequacy of every explaining word. Let us, however, at least assert the reality of the fact which it expresses, for it is no symbolical form of speech, but the statement of a fact, as real in regard to the spirit, as the fact of our being in the world is real in regard to the body" (Thomas Bernard, 1864).
"No words of scripture... hold within themselves a deeper mystery than this simple formula of the Christian life, "in Christ." ... Yet, great as is the mystery of these words, they are the key to the whole system of doctrinal mysteries" (A.J. Gordon, 1872).
"Ye are in Christ Jesus." The whole Christian life depends on the clear consciousness of our position in Christ. Most essential to the abiding in Christ is the daily renewal of our faith's assurance, "I am in Christ Jesus." All fruitful preaching to believers must take this as its starting-point: "Ye are in Christ Jesus." (Andrew Murray, 1884)
"What is it to be in Christ? It is to be represented by Christ, to have Him stand for us, and enter into all the benefits and privileges of His standing" (Albert B. Simpson, 1888).
"Given the fact that in the few pages of the Pauline literature that have survived into our time a specific term is used 164 times merits a high degree of attention on our part. This interest will, of course, grow when the term under discussion actually strikes one as somewhat odd to begin with. This is without doubt the case with the phrases “Ways in Christ Jesus?”, “Brother in the Lord?”, “Churches in Christ?” This is indeed a rather striking expression! How is it to be understood?" (Adolf Deissmann, 1892).
"Those three short words, in Christ Jesus, are, without doubt, the most important ever written, even by an inspired pen, to express the mutual relation of the believer and Christ. Sometimes we meet the expression, in Christ or in Christ Jesus, and again in Him, or in whom, etc." (Arthur T. Pierson, 1898).
"The need is some concept that would reduce the whole of life to the utmost simplicity. If you have that, you're "in"; if you don't have it, you're "out." I felt I had found that concept in the phrase "in Christ." If you are "in Christ" you're "in life"; if you are "out of Christ" you're "out of life" (E. Stanley Jones, 1961). |
